Bandwidth & Disk Space - How much do you really need?

Over the past few months, many web hosts have begun to increase the amount of file space and bandwidth they are offering in their hosting plans. Once one host makes an increase, many hosts follow suit, afraid to be left behind in the competitve web hosting industry. For instance, Lunarpages offers 1,500GB of space and 15,000GB of bandwidth in their basic plan and Hostgator offers 350GB of space and 3,000GB of bandwidth in their base Hatchling plan. Both are quality hosts but don’t compare them on those stats alone.

High amounts of space and bandwidth are nice, but one needs to be careful to only consider that in their hosting choices. Unless a site is serving up videos or large file, most sites will never reach the maximum file or transfer limits imposed and web hosting companies know this, making it easy to increase the limits without really doing anything. It isn’t as though the host is partitioning that amount of disk space on each server and reserving it for you in case you need it. It’s all there for everyone to use and they won’t do anything, unless you go over the limits. Therefore it is easy for hosts to increase these limits with little cost to them because they know how many people will need or use them.

Therefore don’t pay to much attention to the disk space and bandwidth limits. If your site ever needs greater capacities than most hosts already offer in their basic plans, you can always upgrade to a greater plan or even a virtual or dedicated server if your needs grow to that level.
